Dealing With Loss

Dealing With Loss

Dear Positive Way, How do you deal with loss of job, friendship and death?  This all happened together in the last 6 months.  I am not sure how to deal with all of this at all.  I want to learn to move forward and accept the loss. Signed, Loss of things you love. Age 43

Dear Loss of things you love, you certainly have had more than your share of losses in such a short period of time.  Dealing with loss can be very difficult.  Taking good care of your self during this very sad and stressful time is very important.  That may mean going through all of the stages of grief for each loss.  Please read our article on grief and the grieving process .  If possible purchase at least one of the books we have recommended on this subject and allow yourself time to grieve your losses.  There is a saying that you have to “feel to heal”.  Many people make the mistake of running away from their feelings and that can make the grieving process a lot longer than is necessary.  Own your feelings, face them, and cry as much as you need to in order to feel and heal.  Don’t allow others to define how long your process of grieving should take.  That is a very personal thing and it varies from person to person.  Every individual has their own way of dealing with loss.

If necessary seek out some private counseling to help you through all of this.  You could get a referral from a family physician, doctor, or minister.  Talking to a counselor can be very helpful so don’t hesitate to seek outside help if you feel you need to.

Please understand you have free will.  This advice is given only in the realm of personal growth and self-help. This is not to be considered a substitute for therapy or professional counseling.  I wish you well on your journey to dealing with loss.
